Togetherness, Contribution, Resourcefulness, and Simplicity. These words describe the legacy of the Blankenship family. A close-knit family that lived off the land in Western North Carolina and Tennessee, they didn’t have much money, but they had each other. Like a quilt, each member contributed to the family’s well-being through farming, logging, and even beekeeping. The result was a beautiful masterpiece of love, care, and flourishing.
The family reunion potluck event reinforces the theme of contribution and care for others. We gather at the site of the Blankenship Farm, fill our plates with okra and biscuits, visit the cemetery of loved ones lost in battle and sickness, and mingle with our mountain kin.

Each piece tells the story of the Blankenship Farm.
Cultivated by a family, never a slave.
Stitched together through love and hard work.
Torn by war and death.
Patched together by community.
Woven into the beauty and harshness of the mountain.
Passed down through generations.
Each member is a part of the legacy.
